Douglas was established in 1886 when it was chosen by Union Pacific Railroad to be a rail stop and supply line to Fort Fetterman, located north of town. Soon thousands of pioneers came to build this new town.

Douglas is home of the “jackalope,” a mysterious and elusive cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope, which was first discovered here. Douglas is also home to Ft. Fetterman, POW Officers Camp and the Wyoming State Fair & Rodeo which is held in August.

The Douglas Railroad Interpretive Center is arguably the most important historic attraction in Douglas. As for the Depot, after being closed to regular passenger traffic in the 1950’s, it was used for a time as a railroad storage facility, and then retired from service in the 1970’s. In later years, it fell into a state of disrepair. But in the 1990’s after being acquired by the City of Douglas, it was meticulously restored and now serves as headquarters for both the Railroad Interpretive Center, the Douglas Chamber of Commerce and the area’s Visitor Information Center. The Douglas Railroad Days in July is an annual event celebrating the train and features art and photography at the Rail Expo.

Every August, Douglas is home to the Wyoming State Fair, which features entertainment, livestock shows and rodeos. Inside the Fairgrounds is the Pioneer Memorial Museum which is dedicated to the documentation of the westward expansion. Douglas also hosts the Douglas Invitational Art Show and Sale at the Pioneer Memorial Museum in August.
