The warm attitude of the town’s people and the town’s historical significance far overshadow this town’s small population. Kemmerer’s history is one of coal and “Penneys.” Named after the financier of many of the area’s coal discoveries, Kemmerer was once an epicenter for a burgeoning coal mining industry.
In sharp contrast to the smudge of coal, Kemmerer is also home to Mr. J.C. Penney’s first store. Founded in 1902, the store was destined to succeed. The first day it grossed nearly $470. The first year it grossed $29,000. Now, J.C. Penney is one of the largest retail chain stores in the country.
Kemmerer is also known as the “Fossil Fish Capital of the World.” Kemmerer offers many recreational opportunities including, tennis, basketball, swimming, golfing and a baseball complex. Lake Viva Naughton/Kemmerer Reservoir is located to the north and offers year-round fishing.
In the winter, snowmobilers will enjoy the approximately 70 miles of groomed trails and over 100 miles of ungroomed trails only a few miles from town. The golf course is open during the winter for cross-country skiers.
