Shoshone National Forest was the first national forest in the United States, proclaimed by President Benjamin Harrison in 1891.
It is also the home of the country’s oldest ranger station, Wapiti Ranger Station, located along scenic U.S. Highway 20/14/16, which winds through the Shoshone National Forest between Yellowstone National Park and the city of Cody.
Shoshone National Forest, originally known as Yellowstone Park Timberland Reserve, was renamed in 1945 for the native Shoshone Indians. Spanning nearly 2.5 million acres, Shoshone National Forest is one of the country’s largest. |
